Barbara Nelson is the Office Manager and Donor Relations expert at WPFF and WNLI. Barbara has been on some interesting adventures in her life—and they have all been with her husband, Rick, by her side. Barbara describes Rick as her “one and only high school boyfriend.” They celebrated 40 years of marriage this past year.
Barbara and Rick both grew up in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and moved away after high school. Eight years ago they were able to come back to what they have always considered home. Rick is the Executive Director of the Door County chapter of Habitat for Humanity and also leads crews of volunteers to Honduras to build houses for the poor.
Barbara and Rick have three children. Erik is married and is a Captain in the U.S. Army. He will be on assignment in Portugal for a year. Her daughter Kirstin just got married. Kirstin and her husband work in Washington D.C. in the Congressional Budget Office. Her son Isak is also married and is a crew boss at Ace Marine where he builds U.S. Coast Guard boats. Barbara and Rick also have 3 granddaughters named Arleth, Emma and Ava.
Cheering for the Packers is a serious deal for Barbara and Rick. They have been fans of the Packers since they were teenagers. “My husband has been to the Ice Bowl of 1967 and the Mud Bowl of 1997,” Barbara said.
Barbara and Rick were full-time missionaries for 10 years on the Miskito Coast of Honduras in Central America. While there, Barbara had some interesting jobs. She was a Ham Radio Operator and she also opened a Christian book store in Ahuas, Honduras.
“I would take books to other villages by dugout canoes so people could have Bibles and hymnals in their homes,” Barbara said.
Barbara’s passion is to live her life as if God was walking side by side with her, which fits perfectly with the new mission statement for Bethesda Christian Broadcasting: To impact people for Christ and equip them to put their faith into action.
“I think the mission statement will be as clear to others as it is to me: To live as if God is next to us!” Barbara said.
