Don Burns, WPFF and WNLI’s Operations Manager and Program Director, may be the most traveled staff member. He grew up in San Diego, California but considers Dallas/Fort Worth his hometown. Since childhood Don has seen a whirlwind of towns and cities that span through Texas, California, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and now Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. Don has also traveled abroad to eight different countries.
Some of Don’s interests include radio, sports, and spending time with his wife, Valerie. Don married Valerie in April of 1988 and they have two children—Kevin and Kayla. Kevin resides in Oklahoma and is married to Veronica. Kayla is a student at Lee University in Tennessee. Don and Valerie are also fond of Bella—their Beagle/Corgi mix dog.
One of Don’s most interesting jobs as a kid was working as a paper boy for the San Diego Union when he was just 14 years old. For two years, he got up every morning at 4:30 a.m. to deliver the newspapers on his route—only missing three days and oversleeping just once! A little known fact about Don is that he is a PK—preacher’s kid. His stepdad was a Baptist preacher.
Don has acclimated to Wisconsin—including its weather and love for the Green Bay Packers. Although he has been seen cheering on the Green and Gold on occasion, he still holds some ties to one of the Pack’s rivals. “Don’t hate me, but my favorite football team is the Dallas Cowboys,” Don said. “But I have been drinking the Green and Gold Kool-Aid and I like the Packers more every day.”
On a more serious note, Don works faithfully each day toward fulfilling WPFF and WNLI’s mission, “To impact people for Christ and equip them to put their faith into action.”
“That statement sums up why I wanted to be in Christian radio,” Don said. “To share the Good News of Jesus Christ, and to encourage people in their faith with the music we play and the things we do.”
